How to Upscale Image for Printing

Upscale any image to the right resolution for printing — from photo prints to large-format posters.

Print requires far more pixels than screen display. A photo that looks great on your monitor may print poorly if it doesn't have sufficient resolution. Understanding the relationship between pixels, DPI, and print size — and knowing how to upscale images to meet print requirements — is essential for photographers, designers, and anyone producing physical print materials.

DPI and Print Size — Understanding the Relationship

DPI (Dots Per Inch) describes how many pixels are printed per inch of physical space. Standard print quality is 300 DPI. For a 6×4 inch photo print, you need at least 1800×1200 pixels. For A4 (8.27×11.69 inches) at 300 DPI, you need 2480×3508 pixels. Use the formula: print size in inches × DPI = pixels required.

A4 (8.27 × 11.69 in)2480 × 3508 px
A3 (11.69 × 16.54 in)3508 × 4961 px

How to Upscale an Image for Printing

  1. Calculate the required pixel dimensions using the formula above (print size × DPI).
  2. Open the Image Enlarger at imgresizr.com.
  3. Upload your image and enter the required output dimensions.
  4. Apply the highest quality upscaling available.
  5. Download the upscaled image and send it to your printer or print service.

Print Upscaling Tips

Set Image DPI in File Metadata

After upscaling to the correct pixel count, set the image's DPI metadata to 300 using your image editor. Many professional print services and applications read this metadata — images with 72 DPI metadata may be resized incorrectly by some print software, even if they have sufficient pixels.

Upscaling Has Limits

Upscaling can only do so much. A 200×200px image upscaled to 2000×2000px will still look soft at close viewing distances, regardless of the algorithm used. The practical maximum is roughly 4× linear upscaling (e.g. 500px → 2000px) with good algorithms, before the loss of original detail becomes too apparent.
