How to Enlarge Photo for Poster Printing

Enlarge your photos to poster size without pixelation — A3, A2, A1 or any custom print size.

Large-format poster printing is a completely different challenge from standard photo printing. An A1 or A0 poster is viewed from a distance of several feet, which means slightly lower DPI is acceptable. But you still need a minimum resolution to avoid obvious pixelation — especially for indoor posters viewed up close. Getting the enlargement right before sending to a print shop saves time, money, and disappointment.

Minimum Image Size for Poster Printing

Print shops typically recommend 150–200 DPI for large format posters (as opposed to 300 DPI for standard photo prints) because posters are viewed from a distance. At 150 DPI, an A1 poster (33.11×23.39 inches) requires 4966×3508 pixels. At 200 DPI, it requires 6622×4677 pixels.

Tips for Great Poster Prints

Sharp Subject = Better Enlargement

Photos taken with good technique — sharp focus, good lighting, no motion blur — upscale much better than soft or blurry originals. A sharp 5MP smartphone photo often enlarges more successfully to A2 size than a blurry 12MP one.

Get a Digital Proof

Always request a digital proof (a PDF preview at actual size) before printing large quantities. A single test print of A4 (at the same quality settings) can also reveal quality issues before committing to full-size printing.
